Biography

Domenica Musumeci  is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Federico II University of Naples where she carries out various research projects mostly related to the development of anticancer/anti-inflammatory agents based on both small organic molecules (natural or synthetic) and oligonucleotide aptamers (mainly forming G-quadruplex structures). She is also interested in the study of the interaction of small-molecules or oligonucleotide aptamers with nucleic acid or protein targets through biophysical techniques (CD, fluorescence, UV-vis, IR, DLS, EMSA, ELISA-like assays, etc.)

Domenica Musumeci graduated in Chemistry in 1997 and obtained her PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2001, at the Federico II University of Naples.

She worked at the Institute of Biostructures and Bioimaging (IBB) – CNR in Naples from 2002 to 2007; she participated in the birth of the company Bionucleon srl (a drug-discovery start-up) in 2006, and has coordinated the laboratories of the Naples site of this company for several years, since 2007, dealing with selection, synthesis and biological activity of oligonucleotide aptamers against protein targets involved in inflammatory and tumorigenic processes (development of anti-inflammatory and antitumor drugs).

From 2012 to the end of 2020, she was a fixed-term researcher of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Federico II University of Naples, and from January 2021 she is Associate Professor.

She is co-author of more than 90 ISI scientific publications, 3 Patents and 2 book chapters and has participated in various national and international conferences presenting oral communications relating to her research activity.

She was Guest Editor of international scientific journals and Reviewer of both international scientific projects and many papers submitted to journals in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology field.
